Major Nelson had the unfortunate task yesterday to break the news that Xbox Live was going to be raising its prices, and the fury of a thousand rabid fanboys was unleashed in his direction. For one, I don’t really understand what the big deal is, and two, I don’t know why so much of it was directed at Major Nelson himself.

We’ll start with Major Nelson. He runs his own blog separate from any official Microsoft site where he lets people know about what’s coming down the pipeline, hosts gaming discussions, and does a weekly podcast with several other members of the Xbox team.

I’ve met (read: Said “Hey, Major Nelson!” as I walked by him at PAX) Major Nelson and listened to his pod casts, as well as watching the videos he does on Xbox Live, and he’s really a super nice guy. You can tell he really loves his job and he’s very passionate about the Xbox and what it offers people. To see the amount of bile that was spewed by the slack-jawed idiots on his blog yesterday was embarrassing. It’s a real pet peeve of mine to see people act like jerks around someone who’s really nice and well-mannered.

I mean, it wasn’t even his decision! It’s not like he was sitting in his office thinking of ways to piss people off. The decision was made by people MUCH higher than him and he was the messenger. Directing all that rage at him was not only pointless and idiotic, it was also misguided.

I felt bad for him. On his Twitter at the end of the day, he posted using the hashtag “#TodayIWasAPunchingBag.” Major Nelson, if you’re reading this, I still think you’re a cool guy.

But getting back to the point at hand: the increase in price for Xbox Live. It’s had consistent pricing since 2002 (eight years ago if you’re not keeping score) and the price isn’t even raising that much. A one month recurring membership is going from $7.99 to $9.99, and a 12-month subscription is going up from $49.99 to $59.99. That’s $2 a month if you do a recurring subscription (totaling $24 a year) and $10 a year if you buy it a year at a time.

Is that REALLY worth getting upset over?

What’s $10 a year? So you may get one less trip to Taco Bell this year. If I made $10 less a year I wouldn’t even notice. If I made $100 less a year I probably still wouldn’t notice. I probably lose $2 a month in loose change. People are really swearing out a guy over TEN DOLLARS A YEAR.

(Also note, Microsoft is offering a promotion where you can lock-in at $39.99 for the next year, the new price will kick in once that wears off. You can use that year to save up that $10 that’s so precious to you!)

The fact is, Xbox Live is a great deal on a great service. Sure, PlayStation Network is free, but Xbox Live is more stable and gives you a lot more features to play with (on PSN, you can’t chat with friends who aren’t playing the same game as you. I’ve played Viva Piñata while talking with friends playing Gears of War). There’s all the different video features, like achievement tips and previews of upcoming games. $50 a year was a fair price in 2002, and inflation has occurred since then. A $10 hike for a year really isn’t that big a deal.

I’ll gladly give Microsoft an extra $10 because I like the service they provide. If an extra $10 a year is too steep for you, feel free to cancel your subscription. Just, please, do it quietly. The internet really doesn’t need more whining on it.

I finally got to play Scott Pilgrim vs. The World! Apparently, when Microsoft does their “Summer of Arcade” promotion, they don’t allow multiplatform games, so that’s why it came out so much earlier on the PlayStation Network. BAH. Anyway, we have it now!

And it’s awesome. Everything is perfect. The music, performed by rad chiptune rock band Anamanaguchi, fits the mood perfectly and does a really good job at recreating the heart-pumping tunes that flowed from the old beat-em-up arcade machines. The graphics are amazing, being both retro and gorgeous hi-def at the same time.

The entire game is really just a love letter to the games of yore. The map screen looks like Super Mario Bros 3, the character select screen is the same as Super Mario Bros 2, and at the end of a level, Scott will teleport away like Mega Man, Stephen Stills goes down a warp pipe, and Kim rides away on a warp star.

The thing is, the game is hard. Like, HARD hard. I’m trying to think of a funny metaphor but I can’t come up with one that isn’t dirty. As my buddy Syphon so eloquently put it, “It’s hard because we’re not NES tough anymore.” Remember how controller-crushingly frustrating old beat-em-ups on the NES and in the arcade were? Scott Pilgrim is like that. I invented new swear words as Christina and I battled Todd Ingram. The good thing, though, is it’s not SO HARD that you want to stop playing. It’s the kind of hard that when you lose, you keep trying just to show the game who’s really the boss.

Item and experience systems make things a little bit easier, since you can buy food or clothing items to boost your stats, and you can always go back and grind on earlier levels to raise your experience more. The combat is fun and stylish, so even though you’re fighting a lot of guys who look the same, you have fun doing it.

I’ve preached enough about the Scott Pilgrim franchise now for you to know that any product with that name is going to be awesome. It’s only $10 and you’re going to have a freakin’ good time with it. GO BUY NOW

You might remember me talking about how great Braid was. You should also know that everything I say is right. Ergo, when I say “Limbo is the best game like Braid since Braid,” you can take that right to the bank.

I’m oversimplifying things a bit, because Braid and Limbo aren’t as similar as I make them seem. They’re both wonderfully engaging, artful puzzle-platformers, but while Braid lavishes you with color and whimsical music with intermittent cryptic narration, Limbo gives you a stark, horrific world populated only with isolation and a thin line between life and death.

I downloaded Limbo from Xbox Live Arcade Friday afternoon and played it for about 45 seconds before turning it off. I immediately knew I was doing it wrong. It was still bright outside, and the sounds of cars and foot traffic wafted in through the window. No, no, that wouldn’t do. I occupied myself with other things until dark, when we turned off the lights and let the atmosphere of Limbo pull us in.

In Limbo, there is no story, only a tagline I was unaware of until I had finished the game and read about it online, “Unsure of his sister’s fate, a boy enters the unknown.” The game opens in a dark forest composed entirely of black, white, and shades of gray. A silhouette of a boy stands up, his glowing eyes his only discernable features. With that, Limbo starts. There are no cut scenes, no dialog, and no direction. You just go, trying to survive in a world that finds a new way to kill you every few steps.

I don’t want to go too into the gameplay because I don’t want to spoil it, but rest assured that you won’t want to put down the controller. You have two buttons, jump and action, and they’re all you need. You will die, and you will die a lot, but the penalty is minimum. The developers at Playdead have even called it a “trial-and-death” game. It’s never frustrating, but consistently challenging.

Many people have complained about the game’s length versus its cost (the game runs for $15 in earth dollars, which I think is 1200 points in Microsoft’s moon currency, and the game will take you about 5 hours from start to finish) but it’s a prime example of maintaining the vision of a game and not compromising it in order to appease a vocal minority. I didn’t want Limbo to be longer, and I thought I got my money’s worth and then some. People will pay more than $15 for a DVD or Blu-Ray, which last about half as long as Limbo, so I really don’t see what the big deal is. The game keeps you engaged until the very end, but it leaves you very fulfilled rather than shortchanged.

I know I’m a few weeks late on Limbo, but that should show you that the glowing reviews you might read elsewhere aren’t just for a flavor of the moment game. Limbo is different in tone and execution from Braid, but it does evoke similar feelings as you play through it. That, I think, says more in itself than I could if I tried to embellish on it. $15 spent on Limbo is $15 well spent, and as a fan of either gaming, art, or both, Limbo is something you should not pass on for any reason.

I watched the live stream of Microsoft’s E3 press conference while I was at work today. I felt it was a productive use of my time. Here’s what I thought.

They opened up with a new Call of Duty game, Black Ops. This one is by Treyarch, who are the guys who DIDN’T make Modern Warfare. The first 10 minutes or so of Microsoft’s conference was one of the developers playing the game. He didn’t talk about it, he didn’t narrate, it wasn’t a cutscene… he just played. It was super boring. I was working on reports while that was going on, so all I got was the audio. It sounded just like the other ones.

Then Cliffy B and some other folks came out and gave a demo of Gears of War 3. Don’t ask me why, but the Gears series are really the only shooters that I enjoy. The demo looked pretty intense. There was a lot of color in this one! Instead of just old abandoned buildings, ruined cities and caves, the battle here took place on the outskirts of a jungle. I really dug it. I’m deliberately not paying much attention to Gears of War 3 coverage, because I want to go in to it without a whole lot of expectations, but it looked good.

Xbox spokesman Don Mattrick said that the three biggest properties in gaming were Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty. I laughed.

They showed some stuff from Halo: Reach. It looked like Halo. That’s good for people who like Halo!

The rest of their conference was all about Kinect, the new name of Project Natal. They showed off how it can be used to manipulate menus, which was kinda neat I guess. It can recognize voice commands as well. Saying “Xbox! Music!” made it activate the last.fm feature of the Xbox 360.

For some reason Microsoft signed an agreement with ESPN to allow streaming sports to their console. You can use Kinect to, er, connect with other sports fans. The bottom of the screen says “Which team are you rooting for?” If I was watching the NBA Finals and I said “Xbox! Join Celtics!” it would take me to an area where I’d be watching the game with other sports fans.

It’s a neat idea, but I can’t see people choosing that over, y’know, just changing the channel on their TV when the game is on.

Then they showed off a lot of Kinect games. There was Kinectimals, which was like a virtual petting zoo. They had their Wii Sports clone, their Wii Fit clone, and a dancing game. Then they showed off a badass Star Wars game, where you played as a Jedi, deflecting blaster bolts back at Stormtroopers with your lightsaber.

They wrapped up the show by unveiling what’s basically the Xbox 360 slim. Smaller, sleeker, and quieter than the current 360, it’s got a glossy black finish and looks like a fancy PC case mod. It’s also Kinect ready (the Kinect only needs to be plugged into the system, on older models Kinect will need to be plugged into the wall as well). It has a 250 GB hard drive and has a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. They also announced it was shipping today and would be in stores by the end of the week.

As far as I’m concerned, Kinect is very impressive technology without much application. Microsoft’s mantra throughout the conference was “We want to make it simple,” but I can’t see navigating menus with my hands easier than just using a controller with a d-pad on it. The video chat was neat, but I can’t see anyone plunking down the cash just for that when they can just use a webcam on their PC.

The games… eh. The entire lineup just screamed “We wish we did the Wii first.” Everything they showed except for Kinectimals had a Wii equivalent, and you could make the assumption that even that’s just a hi-def Nintendogs.

I just don’t know who Microsoft is really targeting with Kinect. The obvious answer is people who like motion control, but honestly everyone who wants motion control already has a Wii. The 360’s core demographic isn’t going to be lining up for Kinectimals or Kinect Sports. People who start gaming on Wii might later move on to the Xbox 360, but if they do that, it’s because they’re looking for more mature games and a more traditional experience, not because they want what they already have but with better graphics.

And then the redesign comes into play. If you want to target new consumers, especially ones who don’t own a game console, you are not going to convince them to buy your console over the Wii when it looks like that. Sharp angles and a black finish make the machine look like a very formidable piece of technology, which is intimidating to people who aren’t already tech savvy. People know the Wii and they’re familiar with its image: clean, white, and friendly. The Xbox 360 is sharp, expensive looking, and will require the purchase of another accessory for motion controls.

I don’t think I’ll be picking up Kinect. I like my Xbox 360 as a compliment to my Wii: I can play motion games as well as hi-def traditional games. I can’t see putting the money into investing in a motion control scheme that doesn’t have Mario or Zelda attached to it.

It’s a shame that they based their whole conference on it, because if I was a 360 exclusive gamer, I’d feel pretty bummed out right about now.

By now you’ve probably seen the commercial for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 racer Blur, because I don’t even watch that much TV and I’ve seen it probably 70 times. This commercial is awful and represents a lot of what’s wrong with video games these days.

Also, yes, I know Kotaku kinda wrote about this today, but I was going to write this up yesterday but decided to do the contest instead. Whatever. I didn’t steal the idea.

Anyway, you have a generic colorful fantasy setting, and the character pining to escape into the edgy, dark realistic world of Blur. Blur, in case you haven’t read about it, is pretty much Mario Kart but with less colors and real cars. You still get power-ups to give you the edge in races and everything. It’s Mario Kart minus Mario. And karts, I guess. But it’s still takes a lot of its inspiration from Mario Kart, if that still makes sense.

The problem with this ad, though, is it just reinforces the ignorant attitude of far too many gamers these days. “YOU LIKE COLOR? YOU’RE A WUSS. WE HAVE REAL CARS AND DARK BUILDINGS. GROW UP.” Who’s more grown up: the person who can enjoy something regardless of how it looks to others, or someone who has to constantly overstate their masculinity by subscribing to society’s “macho” stereotype?

I mean really. If you want to play Mario Kart, play Mario Kart. Everyone likes Mario Kart.

Like we’ve talked about before in posts and podcasts, far too many gamers these days feel it’s necessary to insult everyone who plays anything that’s considered “kiddy” or “casual.” This commercial only throws more fuel onto the fire. It’s fine if you don’t want to play Mario Kart, but why do you need to take the time and effort to rip on people who do?

I’m 26 years old and I still enjoy colorful games. I enjoy mature games, too. I don’t, however, enjoy trying to make people feel bad for enjoying games that they think are fun. I mean, yeah, I guess I’m kinda ripping on Blur here but THEY STARTED IT.

It all comes down to this: ten years from now, people are still going to be playing Mario Kart. It’s distinctive, it’s well made, and it’s fun. In ten years, are people still going to be playing Blur? If someone mentions Blur in a conversation, will it evoke memories and excitement from others?

Today is the debut of a new feature here at PK Bloggin’! entitled Snap Judgements. I have a GameFly account now, and as a result I’m renting games for the first time in about seven years. I’m adding anything remotely interesting to my queue with a “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” philosophy. I’m not going to like everything I play, which is where Snap Judgements comes in. I’ll give you my thoughts on the first half hour or so of a game, and whether or not I plan on continuing. It should be fun and generate a lot of hate mail, so why the heck not.

Today’s Snap Judgement is Darksiders for the Xbox 360. I heard about this game a little while ago, and until I put the game in my console all I really knew was “it’s like Zelda but darker.” Well, I thought “Zelda but darker” was Twilight Princess, but what they hey. I’ll give it a shot.

There was a little back and forth between Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett and Penny Arcade’s Gabe. In Luke’s review, he made statements about Darksiders character designer Joe Madureira’s work on the game, claiming “Its bulging, ridiculous characters are like something built to appeal to 16 year-old boys from the 1990’s.” Gabe took a lot of offense to that and said that statement said more about Luke Plunkett than it did Joe Mad.

I’m going to have to take Luke’s side on this one. The art style in this game is a mess. I’m sure there’s some people, especially American comic book fans, who love Joe Mad’s style. That’s good for you, and you’ll love how this game looks. For me, it does nothing. When a characters arms are almost as wide as their chest, and he could hold six or seven of his own head in his giant metal hand, it looks messy to me. But my opinion is my own, and I have to listen when everyone bashes the work of Akira Toriyama so now we’re even.

The combat isn’t terribly exciting. It’s just mash X until the enemy takes a certain amount of damage, then push B for a cinematic kill. I don’t have a problem with button mashing combat, as long as it has a certain level of polish and finesse to it. Bayonetta did this flawlessly, with combat that’s stylish and exciting thanks to the lithe, agile protagonist. Darksiders hero War is a slow, plodding beast, with legs he probably stole from some kind of Hell elephant. You’re pretty frequently attacked from the back during mid-combo, and since you only have one attack button you don’t have a nice variety of combinations to pull off like in Bayonetta. It’s just slash, slash, spin slash, upwards slash, repeat. Over and over and over.

The one really cool thing from the first level is you can pick up cars and throw them. You throw them really far, too. There was a giant Hell demon thing I had to weaken by throwing cars at his face. That was pretty neat.

Oh, and Mark Hamill’s voice is in the game. I’m a fan of that.

I’m really not into Darksiders. I still have Final Fantasy XIII to finish (I’m slow, I know, but I’m an adult with a full time job, so leave me be) and I got a few Xbox Live Arcade titles that were on sale this week, plus I’m running through Pokémon on my DS as well. I’m probably not going to play it again, and since I haven’t earned any Achievements yet I can delete it from my played game history and move on with my life.

It’s not TERRIBLE, but it’s not really for me.

I want to talk about Final Fantasy XIII for a bit.

If you’ve been following my thoughts on the game leading up to its release, you’ll remember I’ve been kinda up and down on the subject, my interest fluctuating much like the wave pools at a water park. At first I wasn’t even sure I’d pick it up on release day, but a few days before my cynicism got hit by a Limit Break of excitement and I decided I’d get it day one. Come on, it’s Final Fantasy!

Or is it?

As of this writing, I’m about 14 hours into the game (I know I’m slow, but I work full time, live with a fiancée who is currently addicted to watching Bleach, and I’ve been playing the new Pokémon as well), and from everything I’ve read, the game will suddenly “click” around the 15 hour mark. I want to write my impressions pre-click, since 14 hours is a long time to invest waiting for something to pick up.

Honestly though, the game is awesome. I’m really, really enjoying it thus far. I’m actually enjoying taking my time with it, because Final Fantasy XIII is much more fast-paced and up-tempo than any other Final Fantasy, and pretty much any other JRPG I’ve ever played. I can’t sit and play for five hours like I would before, the game is mentally taxing.

The first thing people want to know about is the battle system. I wasn’t too sure about it when I would read previews from news blogs, but I think that’s mostly because no one really did that great a job describing it. The best way I can think of describing Final Fantasy XIII’s battle system is if you jammed together Final Fantasy X-2 and Chrono Cross. You have the on-the-fly job switching of X-2 and the attack “costs” of Chrono Cross.

It’s still very much a turn-based system, but it disguises itself well. You still have an ATB bar that needs to fill up before you can take action, but it’s broken into segments. Each attack or spell you perform will use up one or more segments, so you can mix and match and try to make the most of your turn. Certain actions, like summoning your Eidolon, casting Libra, or using healing items can be done at any time and don’t interrupt your ATB bar.

What makes the battle system so interesting and fun is the Paradigm Shift. There are six classes, each suited for different tasks (Commandos are physical attackers, Ravagers are Black Mages, Medics are White Mages, Sentinels will draw enemy attention and shield themselves, Synergists will buff the party, and Saboteurs will debuff the enemy), and you can set up different combinations that you can switch to on the fly. You can have a Sentinel have a strong enemy focus on them, while a Commando and Ravager whale away at it, or have a Medic heal while a Synergist and Saboteur stack the odds against your foes. It allows for a very impressive amount of customization, and you’ll need to be quick on your feet in order to survive some of the tougher fights.

The story, the main draw for a Final Fantasy game, or any RPG in general, is actually pretty good once you figure out what the hell is going on. The game drops you right in the middle of a big conflict and starts throwing around all kinds of terms, like Fal’cie, l’cie, Pulse, Cocoon, and PSICOM and just kind of expects you to pick it up as you go. Luckily, there’s a “datalog” in the menu that acts as an encyclopedia so you can do a little bit of reading when you need a break from all the fighting.

The linearity that the game has taken a lot of flak for isn’t really that big a deal, to be honest. Yes, the game is essentially a series of “hallways,” and you’re pretty much pushed from point A to point B with a few battles in between, but in the context of the story, it makes sense. My only complaint is that the game is so gorgeous, you’ll want to look around and inspect things but what you can look around at is somewhat limited.

The characters are a lot of fun, and the voice acting is fantastic. A lot of people were complaining that the Japanese language track wasn’t selectable in the North American release, but honestly, it’s not needed. All six of the main cast are wonderfully brought to life by their voice actors, and considering some of the cheeseball lines they have to read it’s an impressive feat. Don’t listen to people when they complain about Hope or Vanille, though; both characters are a bit much at first but the more time you spend with them, the more you start to really understand where they’re coming from.

All in all, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with the game so far. I always known it would be a good game, but I was unsure if it would be a good Final Fantasy game. Honestly, so far I’ve only seen one Chocobo (the one that lives in Sazh’s hair that I’ve come to call Frocobo), and I’ve seen Shiva and Odin, and that’s really it. Still, despite the lack of Final Fantasy elements, the game has a very Final Fantasy atmosphere, and you’d be able to tell even if the name wasn’t on the box.

Also, a word to Xbox 360 gamers: the game still looks fantastic on the 360. The reports that it doesn’t look as sharp as the PlayStation 3 version are true, but honestly you can’t tell unless they’re side-by-side. The only issue is the cinematics are compressed to fit on DVDs, but I probably wouldn’t have really noticed if I hadn’t read about it beforehand.

So if you were unsure about whether or not you should take the plunge, I say dive in. For a game that’s received so many mixed reviews, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised.

It’s official. The console wars are over. Everyone can pack up and go home. Microsoft wins.

Why is that, you ask?

Simple: THEY HAVE OLD NICKELODEON SHOWS ON THEIR VIDEO MARKETPLACE.

I have been DYING for DVD releases of the great Nickelodeon shows I grew up with, but they’ve never been bestowed upon me by the TV on DVD gods. Now, for the first time since L.A. Gear sneakers were cool, we can enjoy these glorious, wonderful shows again, thanks to Microsoft. You know, everyone has been calling them a cold, greedy corporation for years, but this… this is like dad just gave us a hug after coming back from a work trip with a huge bag of presents.

You can now download episodes of Rocko’s Modern Life, Angry Beavers, Doug, Ren & Stimpy, Aah! Real Monsters, Rugrats, and my personal favorite, Salute Your Shorts. I guess Rugrats: All Grown Up is on there too, but no one cares.

I turn 26 years old tomorrow and I have horrible old man syndrome. I get angry when I see Lunchables that aren’t just crackers and lunchmeat. I once heard a kid say “What’s a Sega Genesis?” and I just about had a coronary. These reminders of my childhood, these throwbacks to a simpler time, bring soothing joy to my aging, spiteful heart.

I have the feeling this is Nickelodeon’s way to “test market” these shows and see if a DVD release would be profitable, since the two shows they DID put on DVD, The Adventures of Pete & Pete and Clarissa Explains it All, aren’t on there. So go download every episode so we can have more. Thanks.

We’ve gotten some new readers lately, people who don’t know me in real life. These people don’t know a lot about me, so I’m going to take this opportunity to let them get to know me a little better. A big part of my personality is that I like things that are rad, and also things that are awesome. Something that is both rad AND awesome is Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, which I picked up over the weekend.

It’s no secret that I love Sega. I sided with the Genesis during the Console Wars of the early 90s, and I love my Genesis and my Dreamcast dearly to this day. I love Mario games, but I’ve always preferred Sonic as a character (that is, until his fans start writing fanfiction… gross). Sega’s roster of superstars might not be as recognizable as Nintendo’s best, but with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sega may have just out-Mario Karted Nintendo.

I bought Sega Superstars Tennis when it came out, and I had a lot of fun with it. It was cool having so much Sega fanservice in one game, but it was kinda… lacking in some places. It didn’t have a ton of characters, and they were all kinda predictable. Fortunately, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing goes even further, bolstering the usual lineup of Sonic characters, Ulala, Beat, Amigo, AiAi and Alex Kidd with Billy Hatcher, Zobio and Zobiko from House of the Dead, Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue, my man B.D. Joe from Crazy Taxi, the Chu Chus from Chu Chu Rocket, the Bonanza Bros, Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone, Akira and Jacky from Virtua Fighter, and on the Xbox 360, Banjo and Kazooie.

Rather than having a series of tracks made up just for the game, they’re all based on locales from old Sega games, including Tokyo-to from Jet Set Radio along with a zillion Sonic levels. They all look gorgeous on the 360, really showing off how good an HD game can look when they use more than brown and grey. The music is the same deal, instead of new tracks for the game, it’s a celebration of Sega’s finest with each track paired with a corresponding song from the game it represents.

Now, I love Mario Kart. HOWEVER, there is one thing about Mario Kart that drives me (and everyone else) absolutely nuts: no matter how good you do, no matter how far ahead of the pack you get, they will ALWAYS catch up to you. When you’re about to cross that finish line in 1st place, you can bet your plumber’s booty that you WILL get hit with a blue shell, 3 red shells, and get run over before you finish 6th. This “rubberbanding” is intended to keep the game challenging, but instead it makes it frustrating the point of being unenjoyable. It’s in every Mario Kart to some extent, but Mario Kart Wii was unflinchingly brutal. I gave up trying to unlock things when I realized that it was going to rely more on luck than skill.

Fortunately, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing doesn’t do that. When I was playing on a low difficulty, I’d finish in 1st with a good 10 second gap between me and the 2nd place racer. Sometimes, the last place racers would get a Did Not Finish instead of a time. You can adjust the difficulty to be more challenging, but that’s what it is: more challenging. They don’t out-and-out cheat like in Mario Kart.

The different multiplayer modes are a blast too, with fun modes like King of the Hill and others along with the standard Race and Battle. Single player gets a huge replay boost with Mission mode, consisting of dozens of ranked challenges like hitting targets, collecting rings, and other character-specific tasks.

The achievements all even have funny references to Sega’s history, like “Streets of Rage” for knocking an opponent off of the track, or “Mega Driver” for earning a AAA rank on any mission.

I can’t say enough good things about the game. It’s a blast. I haven’t even gone online with it yet and I’m having a ton of fun every time I pick up the controller. It’s even retailing for $49.99, $10 less than most other Xbox 360 games.

(I’m sure the Wii version is a lot of fun too, but I wanted the Xbox 360 version for Banjo & Kazooie, pretty graphics and music and achievements, plus online. The 360 version has the most bonus characters of any version as well, with Banjo & Kazooie and your avatar. The Wii gets Miis. The PlayStation 3 has no exclusive characters.)

Seriously. Go get it. LOVE IT. It’s a celebration of everything Sega, and it’s really nice to see them knock one out of the park like this. Go buy it so they release downloadable content, like Toe Jam & Earl. If we don’t get Toe Jam & Earl as DLC for this game, I’m blaming you personally.
