Man, I can relate! Though I'm a good 5 years younger than you, I only played Earthbound for the first time a few months ago, and it is an utterly magical experience. The only other game I have ever played that had such a firm hold on my soul so quickly was Okami.

Thanks for posting your thoughts, bro. :D

This game is a monster on eBay! I can only wish and hope to find a copy for a few bucks at some garage sale or thrift store.

This game.. well you know, it has a LOT of sentimental value for me, since it was one of the first games I ever preordered to pick up on launch day when I was 10, and my first playthrough was with my dad. I'm so glad I was able to share the experience with you! Wish I still had the box and guide so you could experience those too! :P

But less about me and about the game itself, the thing that's always really stood out to me about EarthBound, is the drastic mood change the game undergoes, almost sneaking the emotion in around the halfway point. It's, I think, an unfortunate big reason that the game got overlooked as "kiddie" or "cheesy" by people who only played it a small bit.

[Spoilerish I guess even though the game is 15 years old:]
For the first few hours of the game, I feel like the game is like, 'Oh, here are these kids, they suddenly find out they're heroes, let's go on an adventure and have fun!' and you get into a comfort zone with that mood. Then you get to Fourside, and you're shopping in the mall, and BAM! Little girl (Paula) gets kidnapped suddenly, the mall turns all dark, and you've got to fight your way through the now-dark-and-scary-when-moments-ago-was-totally-normal shopping mall. That's about the turning point of the game, I think. I mean, child abduction is no joke, and you have to admit for a video game it's a little unnerving!

I feel like this comment is getting too long, and I don't want to detract from your article, but just to name a few more "wow, this is getting serious/worse/creepy" moments in the game... Moonside, Mu Training, Deep Darkness, Lumine Hall, Magicant... and of course, the ending and everything leading up to it... well I guess basically, my point is not to judge the game by the first few hours too much if you're not into that sort of thing. It will eventually throw you for a loop. But, that is the kind of genius of Itoi, I suppose. :)
